New Year is a great time to wipe the slate clean and decide how you want to define yourself for the year ahead. However exciting setting new goals in the new year is, we too often slip back into old habits once our motivation and excitement dwindles.
Here's NOT what you should do if you don't want to fall into the trap of giving up!
Drastically change your habits and routine instantly. Maybe your goal is to get out cycling more times in the week. Set a big goal by the end of the year and only gradually increase your time out on the bike.
Expect to make huge transformations very early on. Instead focus on all the small steps on progress you make along the way.
Get frustrated when you are not having a good day. We can't all perform at our best everyday. Be reflective and see every day as a lesson. Learn from your mistakes.
Don't get out of your comfort zone. A little anxiety is good, it means that you will be making positive changes.
Follow a fad diet. You may loose weight quickly, but you won't be able to sustain it, most people that follow fad diets end up heavier than before.
Give up when work commitments get in the way. Be realistic with your time write down all the things that you have to do that are non-negotiable, then realistically plan how much time you have for cycling.
Give up when you meet a roadblock, you will reach roadblocks along the way learn from them and relish in the challenges they poses to you. You will become a more resilient person from it.
Have goals with without a plan of how to get there. Set your goals and create a roadmap to plan how you will make progress.
Take on everything yourself. If your goals are important to you, be realistic and get the support you need to help you get there.
Stop working on improving your cycling once you achieve your goal. Never stop working on improving yourself and set new goals to keep yourself motivated. Life is a journey not a destination!
